Great for all ages!

What beautiful spring weather we have been having here in Virginia.  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend celebrating Easter or Passover. We started off the weekend with a lovely author celebration at my daughter’s school. My girls were lucky enough to be paired up as journal buddies this year, so we got to hear the book they wrote together.  It was very special! We left there and went straight into spring yardwork, yay! My husband and I spent most of the weekend outside doing mulch and flowers. Now if only everything could stay in bloom for the next few months I would really enjoy it!

My parents left their dog with me this week and headed on their first river cruise. I am very excited for them!  Have you heard of river cruising? If your idea of traveling from hotel to hotel sounds terrible, this is the way to visit various cities and/or countries.  The river cruising industry continues to grow each year because of its convenience, fantastic service and the ability to travel and visit multiple destinations without the logistical stress. In years past these cruises have focused on “seniors” and had a “no kid” policy. While many of the river cruises still cater to the mature, adult populations, several cruise lines have started offering family friendly itineraries as well. These amazing itineraries offer spectacular activities for both adults and children. Here are few that stand out in the river cruising industry.

River Cruises for Families

  • The Rhine with Adventures by Disney/AmaWaterways
Amawaterways is a leader in the River cruising industry and even a bigger power house when teamed up with Adventures by Disney.  Cruise down the Rhine river exploring Basel, Switzerland and Amsterdam and stopping in France and Germany.  Take daily excursions to explore the country side, visit Heidelberg Castle and venture into different villages. On board there are plenty of kid friendly activities including cooking classes, karaoke night, ice cream parties and so much more!

  • Classic German Christmas Markets//Uniworld
During the Christmas season you can cruise from Nuremburg to Frankfurt on Uniworld’s River Queen.  The magical experience will take you to the German Christmas markets as well as take you Frankfurt’s natural history museum special exhibit “Christmas with the Dinosaurs.”  No worries you will still get a taste of the delicious gingerbread, learn about how to make pretzels and shop in all the markets.  On board the ship kids will have their own special classes, special children’s menus as well as kids only dining tables.

  • The Danube//Tauck Bridges
Cruise along the Danube rivbe with Tauck Bridges. This family friendly itinerary will take you between Budapest, Hungary and Vilshofen in Germany making numerous stops in Slovakia and Austria.  Visit castles, take a cycling tour, stop at the Sound of Music movie location in Salzburg and visit Vienna’s Prater amusement park.  On board have fun in cooking classes, folkloric performances and enjoy on deck BBQ.

  • The Yangtze//Abercrombie & Kent
Looking to explore outside of Europe? Abercrombie and Kent offers a “Family China and the Yangtze” tour which incorporates a 3 nights on a River Cruise with additional nights as a land tour.  It’s a wonderful way to meet the locals while also seeing some of the famous sites like the Great Wall of China, terracotta warriors in Xi’an and visiting a panda research facility in Chengdu.  On board children will have the opportunity to paint Chinese opera masks and take calligraphy lessons.

These are just a few itineraries and they are adding more family friendly river cruises each year.  Which one can I help your family travel on?
